Letter: A business dream

The Begich dream of establishing Alaska as an international business hub will never materialize unless political leaders design and implement an effective strategic plan.

The recent focus on ignoring or eliminating services to balance governmental budgets has proven to be penny-wise and pound-foolish.

It is not enough that Anchorage is a primary conduit for air cargo shipping.

Planes that can refuel in Anchorage can carry heavier cargo loads, but most airlines have found international passenger air travel to be most economical and efficient via non-stop routes flying to and from Lower 48 states. Moreover, Alaska has failed to invest in the comprehensive educational system, from kindergarten through university, that is necessary to attract and retain business executives seeking educational opportunity for themselves and their children. Inadequate housing, crumbling and inadequate infrastructure, with declining and uncertain heating fuel sources, and substandard pay and a lack of a pension system for teachers, first responders and other public employees do not signal readiness for a role as an international business hub.
