Letter: Samoan community models leadership, forgiveness

The ADN article Sept. 26 regarding the resolution of understanding offered by our Samoan community to Mayor Suzanne LaFrance and Police Chief Sean Case is a rare but necessary act of leadership and forgiveness.

Through participation in an ancient Kava ceremony, we are seeing the beginning of building a bridge for healing and contemplation in our relationships with the Anchorage leadership chosen to protect our community. It is an emotional and humbling gesture.

As a long-time Anchorage resident, I thank the Alaska Samoan Tribal Council members; their CEO, Rev. Sam Unutoa; the Ladies of the Pacific Dance Academy; and the mayor and police chief for coming together to celebrate the importance of “growing a strong and harmonious relationship among governments and the communities they represent.”

The Greek Stoic philosopher Epictetus said, “It is not what happens to you, but how you react to it that matters.” Easter Leafa and her Samoan family have given us a gift to think about.
