Letter: Same old tricks

I see the Alaska Republican Party is at it again. If it can’t use dubious redistricting efforts to disenfranchise voters who don’t subscribe to its party, they want to get rid of ranked choice voting, which was approved by a majority of Alaska voters.

Ranked choice voting helped Mary Peltola win the sole Alaska seat in the U.S. House, which had been occupied for decades by a Republican. The GOP can’t abide the thought that a Democrat might occupy that seat.

Most Alaskans don’t belong to any political party, myself included. They want to vote for the candidate of their choice, not the candidate one party or the other wants them to vote for. Alaska Republicans are playing their usual election games in an attempt to circumvent ranked choice voting, at the same time as they’re trying to convince Alaska voters to get rid of ranked choice voting altogether. They’ll use every trick in the book to grab power, including supporting a morally bankrupt convicted felon for the presidency. Will they only be happy if we have a Republican dictator in the White House?

I am an undeclared voter. I am not a Democrat, but I will be voting for Mary Peltola for Alaska’s only seat in the U.S. House. I will also be voting for Kamala Harris and Tim Walz for president and vice president — not because the Democratic Party tells me to, but because I want to be able to sleep at night.
