Letter: New definition of patriot

This is a definition that defines extremes on both sides of the aisle.

A “patriot” is someone who loves America but hates Americans who don’t look or think like them. A “patriot” is someone who loves the country enough to stop someone they feel is going to change it from something that they believe it should be.

A real “patriot” takes up arms to protect America from their own personal perceived threats. Used in a sentence: “The patriots communicated their intentions that the 2024 election will not be stolen (again), and would not let this happen (again).” Used in another sentence: “The patriot decided that the only way to silence the politician or judge was to try to shoot them.”

With the 24-hour cycle of competing ideologies on TV and social media reaffirming whatever bias one has; it doesn’t look like it’s going to get much better. I think it’s time to remember that America is “we the people,” in all of our different ancestry, religions, occupations and lifestyles. Don’t let the “us versus them,” “win or lose,” “we’re right and they’re wrong” thinking take over.
