Letter: Voter suppression

Former President Donald Trump has ordered his minions to attempt to shut down the government if he doesn’t get his way on adding a voter suppression measure to the bill to fund the government. He is pushing the far-right notion that undocumented immigrants are voting in presidential elections. He says, “If Republicans in the House, and Senate, don’t get absolute assurances on Election Security, THEY SHOULD, IN NO WAY, SHAPE, OR FORM, GO FORWARD WITH A CONTINUING RESOLUTION ON THE BUDGET. THE DEMOCRATS ARE TRYING TO ‘STUFF’ VOTER REGISTRATIONS WITH ILLEGAL ALIENS. DON’T LET IT HAPPEN—CLOSE IT DOWN.”

This is a flat-out lie. It already is illegal for any undocumented or illegal immigrant to vote in our national elections. Again, it is already illegal. And I ask for proof of a single incident of this already happening. Any attempt by Trump to force this into funding bills is just an attempt to illegally restrict voter access by adding layers to existing rules that can only make it harder for legal voters to register and vote freely.

I am addressing both of Alaska’s U.S. senators, Sen. Lisa Murkowski and Sen. Dan Sullivan, to not support any of Trump’s rhetoric in voting for such voter restrictive actions, actions that I reiterate are already covered by existing law. Actions that can only restrict proper legal access by legal voters and legal residents in the U.S.
