Letter: Drug testing issues

Are faulty drug tests one reason that we have so many people looking for work and also so many employers looking for employees? Although marijuana is legal in Alaska, employers can still require a drug test and the applicant or the employee will still flunk the drug test even if the only drug that shows up is pot.

Ironically, many hard drugs are out of the system within a short time, but marijuana will show up weeks and sometimes even months later. While hard drugs should definitely be a barrier to employment, marijuana use should be treated like alcohol consumption: As long as you show up at the job sober and ready to work it, it should not count against you if you took a drink or smoked a joint days before on your time off.
