Letter: Disrespecting service members

The state of Alaska has the highest percentage of military veterans. If you’re reading this, you’re probably a veteran, actively serving, or a family member or friend of someone who is.

That is why I must comment on Donald Trump’s recent remarks about the military.

On Aug. 15, Trump was speaking about Miriam Sheldon Adelson, whom he rewarded with a President Medal of Freedom. He added, “That’s the highest award you can get as a civilian, it’s the equivalent of the Congressional Medal of Honor, but a civilian version. It’s actually much better because everyone gets the Congressional Medal of Honor — that’s soldiers. They’re either in very bad shape because they’ve been hit so many times by bullets, or they’re dead.”

How dare he belittle our service members? Someone who can say that has no shame, no honor and no empathy for people who defend our freedoms and sacrifice everything for their country. Trump has no business being in the White House. No Alaskan should vote to put him there.
