Letter: Debate rules

If there is to be a debate between Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump, the rules of debate should be clarified and enforced. A basic rule for proper debate requires both parties to adhere to the truth. In this case, the rule should apply whenever they are talking about verifiable elements of their record.

In President Joe Biden’s disastrous debate with Trump, Biden largely abided by this, but Trump said whatever fit his purpose, truthful or not.

Moderators must be charged with notifying the public whenever there is an obvious lie. Of course, this rule must apply equally to both parties.

Perhaps an obvious lie should set off a siren.
