Letters to the Editor

Letter: Saving democracy

I recently read a visionary Abe Lincoln quote that prompted me to write this letter: “We the people are the rightful masters of both Congress and the courts, not to overthrow the Constitution but to overthrow the men who pervert the Constitution.”

Neither the courts, judges nor our elected officials can save democracy. Only we, the voters, can. It is an enormous responsibility that requires knowledge and diligent attention to facts. What we hear, believe and repeat defines us, either as thoughtful engaged citizens, or as ignorant distributors of untruth.

We must check what we hear from political candidates, news pundits, religious zealots and what we read in unsolicited emails, on X or other social platforms.

It is a certainty that the upcoming presidential election will determine the future of democracy. To cut through the political chatter, we can do a computer search for unbiased news sources. There, we will find multiple websites for factual information and unbiased news. We can then make an informed vote.

Together, thoughtfully and boldly, we will save our democracy.
