Letter: Improve employment practices

My autistic granddaughter worked at a well-known Anchorage early learning center for six months as a child care worker. She loved her job and would tell us cute stories about the children’s activities and what a positive experience she had. She finally had a mission in life.

She was terminated due to several “Performance Improvement Plan” recommendations. She did not inform her mom. The center indicated, “… our standard procedures applicable to all employees” were used. The center was clearly unaware of autistic limitations and legal guardian responsibilities. I would be remiss if I did not try to prevent a similar occurrence. I attempted twice to set up a meeting with no success. The center’s response: “… cease further contact regarding this issue.”

My intent was threefold. Update employment practices to include Americans with Disabilities Act accommodations and protocol. Have the Anchorage Equal Rights Commission conduct a class on ADA requirements and the best way to work with the employee. Engage the Anchorage School District Adult Community Transition program. Her teachers would work with the center and the employee to ensure a positive experience.

These improvements are a win-win. Individuals with autism can be excellent child care workers with the appropriate direction. Why the resistance to improve employment practices and retain workers? Shame on the center for their lack of business savvy and unwillingness to improve themselves.
