Letter: The Saturday evening shooting

“The shot heard round the world” started the American Revolution against Great Britain. On the evening of July 13 in Pennsylvania, shots were heard around the world and rightly condemned.

To me, those shots were the painful echoes of the cries of “Hang Mike Pence, hang Mike Pence” on Jan. 6, 2021, at the U.S. Capitol. Violence begets violence.

In reaction to an unexpected result of a dramatic event, people often say “Well, the crows have come home to roost.” The “crows” of violence were coming home to roost last Saturday evening. They arrived with death, injuries and fear — almost succeeding in their main intent.

“America the Beautiful” has a self-inflicted black eye.
