Letter: Death with dignity

Alaska urgently needs legislation to support death with dignity. I work closely with individuals diagnosed with incurable terminal illnesses, many of whom are forced to endure an excruciating end-of-life process. My clients often beg me to advocate for their right to choose how much they must suffer. This letter is a testament to that plea.

The alternative, voluntary stopping eating and drinking (VSED), is grueling for families and often prolongs suffering, leaving individuals in a prolonged state of distress for many days. Offering the choice of when to end one’s life in a state with limited medical resources is not just compassionate, but essential.

Implementing death with dignity legislation will provide Alaskans with the autonomy and relief they deserve during their most vulnerable moments.
