Letter: The Constitution and Trump

In his May 27 anti-Trump commentary, Charles Wohlforth stated that Americans should not question Donald Trump’s legal issues and trials. He believes it is dangerous to our system of government for us to do so.

Unlike what Wohlforth says, the Constitution does not create our system of laws and procedures. Our elected and appointed officials are the creators. Speaking up and out when it is apparent that these officials are bending or abusing the laws or procedures is not dangerous. It is exactly what we should be doing if our country and governing system are to move in the right direction.

If we are at a point of crisis as Wohlforth claims, is it because Trump supporters have abandoned their loyalty to the Constitution, or because these followers are loyal to the Constitution — which inspires them to respond to the political wrongdoings that Wohlforth seems to support and agree with?
