Looking upriver at a dark swirling mass
coming ever closer to where I stand.
My heart is in my throat.
My eyes are wide with wonder.
My ears cupped to magnify the sound.
As thousands of sandhill cranes fly overhead,
their bugling calls vibrate to the depth of my soul
and I immediately know with all of my being:
If this were my last moment on Earth,
my life would be complete.
