Letter: Port's importance

Bob Bell was spot on with his commentary regarding Rep. Mary Peltola’s negative position on Alaska’s viability and survivability. The Port of Alaska is key to providing food, health, and commercial security for our state. Just one extraordinary natural disaster will compromise this port facility in its current condition.

Unfortunately, the U.S. Navy logistical response exercises have all come up short to fill in the need for an immediate return to full operational status. Supportive infrastructure such as airfields and roadways, in a serious event, could be questionable.

Peltola must understand that should the port fail, all other services to constituents will essentially be delayed or lost. Peltola works for all Alaskans. If she doesn’t recognize this obvious fact, perhaps it would be best to have someone who does.
