Letters to the Editor

Letter: Civil discourse

Our nation is moving quickly to another presidential election. The ratcheting- up of insults being hurled at opponents is happening just as quickly.

When this exchange of hostility, the only thing that changes is the fact that these hurtful words are widening the divide.

It is OK and even American to disagree. We have the First Amendment in place to protect the right to free speech. However, the consequences of insulting people in the belief that your opinions will win the day by such behavior only weaken your position.

Think before you respond to anyone who challenges your belief system on any issue. Do you want to win an ally or lose a potential supporter? Anyone can say something stupid, but it takes an intelligent person to say something that will invite an adversary to think.
