I was once an absolute believer in Santa Claus. Why not? All the evidence I was provided by “trusted sources” “proved” his existence to me. My peers believed in him. I saw Santa, heard him speak to me, and even sat on his lap. If he didn’t fulfill my wishes, I accepted that was my fault. At the time, I certainly would have engaged in an insurrection to protect my Santa and might even have written letters to the Anchorage Daily News supporting him.
Alas, a rather grim reality sank in. Finally, I had to accept that what I had believed, while a comforting myth, was in reality just that, a myth which I chose to believe and was reluctant to give up.
Now, as election season approaches, Alaskans might want to guard against having blind faith in just another version of Santa Claus.
