Letter: The party of Lincoln?

President Abraham Lincoln declared in his Gettysburg Address that we are a “government of the people, by the people, for the people.” Conservatives seem to forget this but are correct when they say the government is broken.

What they fail to surmise, however, is that they are responsible. It is the failure of Republicans to govern that is leading to a government shutdown. Millions have been wasted by government agencies having to take the time to just prepare for the possibility of a shutdown. Balancing the budget and reducing the national debt requires control of both expenditures and income.Republicans who are sincerely concerned about a balanced budget should support a robust IRS and increased taxation on the 10% of Americans who control 75% of the nation’s wealth.

Conservatives talk a populist game, but in reality, their platform denies the average American a higher standard of living while protecting and enriching the wealthy who use their dark money to keep a government of the people from working for the people.
