Margo Bellamy and Jharrett Bryantt are spreading a “fear-mongering” message about the governor’s decrease in the budgeted amount of education funding. On June 8 in the ADN, board member Andy Holleman stated that the district’s financial situation is not “dire,” and that most years. the district faces a budget deficit and nearly always figures it out.
In a time when the student population is several thousand students less than a few years ago, the board votes to spend over $30 million to rebuild Inlet View Elementary — against the will of the voters who voted down a bond package in 2022. Then the board talks about closing some schools. Logic would tell you that if Inlet View is in such terrible shape that it should be one of the schools closed rather than building a new one while closing others. I believe the people of Anchorage support education, but we also want to see results instead of seeing Alaska at the bottom of the list for nationwide reading.
