Letter: Misinformation consequences

Fox News has agreed to pay Dominion more than $750 million to compensate it for defamation damages. Fox News viewers will receive nothing for being lied to; they will likely not even know the extent to which they have been lied to unless they listen to other media outlet reports.

Tragically, politicians and so-called news agencies can lie through their teeth with no consequences. Lawyers or doctors who commit malpractice can be sued by their clients or patients for the damages they cause.

Voters and consumers of news ought to have similar rights when they are subjected to intentional and blatant lies. Either that, or require politicians and the news industry to abide by ethical standards, the violation of which will have economic consequences.
