Jim Lieb, in his letter of Feb. 21 (“Repeal ranked-choice voting”) is wrong about previous primaries. He wrote, “(In the) traditional system of state primaries … it is Alaskans who chose the candidate.” No, all Alaskans did not choose primary candidates in the former system. Voters registered in most parties selected one from an open ballot. But starting in 2006, Republicans voted from their own private ballot in every primary election –– and voters registered in other parties were forbidden to see it.
Ranked choice voting is not, as Lieb asserted, “a scheme to elect Democrats.” It is a fair and equitable way for us voters to express our preferences – finally. Let’s keep it!
