Letter: More Native representation needed

I am a 12-year-old Athabascan attending Anchorage STrEaM Academy. I am writing because I want more representation of Alaska Native culture in school. For example, maybe schools could go to the Alaska Native Heritage Center or teach it as a lesson.

I am upset that there is little to no representation of Alaska Native culture in school. As I’m looking around this room, there is zero representation of Native culture.

How am I supposed to know anything about my culture when I am never taught about it in school? Yes, my mother teaches me about my Koyukon Athabascan culture, but the school could too. The one time I have ever been taught Alaska Native culture in school was in the fourth grade.
