Letter: Overhaul food aid

SNAP — Supplemental Nutrition Aid Program — is a well-intentioned program that provides food assistance to low-income Americans. Unfortunately, SNAP foods can lead to obesity, diabetes and other multiple health issues by allowing foods with processed sugars, preservative chemicals and salts to be included. This results in higher government-sponsored Medicaid and Medicare costs as recipients age.

SNAP should be limited to fresh fruits and vegetables, grains and meats with no preservatives. This would result in less subsidized obesity and future health care costs.
