Letter: Assessment math

No offense to long-time Girdwood resident Chris von Imhof, but when accounting for inflation, $250,000 in 1981 is more than $750,000 today.

While I share his concern regarding rising property taxes, prior to two years ago, his home’s assessed value was nearly aligned with the 1981 property and build price.

Not many can afford a home costing three-quarters of a million dollars anywhere in Alaska, and if he could afford to build and pay taxes on that home 40 years ago, it isn’t unreasonable to think he could still do so today when inflation is included and values rise modestly. I’d ask him to consider his position of privilege and all those who find themselves with less. If the wealthy are complaining of rising costs, where does that leave the rest of us?
