Letter: A big loss for Solid Waste Services

The city of Anchorage has lost an outstanding leader of people and an accomplished visionary who managed the least glamorous, yet vitally important utility — Solid Waste Services. With Mark Spafford, Anchorage enjoyed a customer-friendly service, well-maintained transfer station and superbly cared for landfill, entirely funded with user fees and not our taxes.

SWS is more than a trucking service, it operates a recycling center, a hazardous waste disposal facility and works to meet environmental regulatory requirements. There is little if anything to be gained with Mr. Spafford’s resignation.
