Regarding a recent letter writer’s question about Nunaka Valley’s name, I offer an explanation. Though I’m not a linguist, I understand that “nuna” means “land” in the Inuit languages. My mother, who was Inupiaq, born and raised in Teller, told me that “Nunaka” means “our land.”
The first home I purchased was on Miley Street in Nunaka Valley, and I recall that housing development was brand new when I was a kid in the 1950s. My Miley Street house was built, I believe, in 1954.
