As senior citizens, my wife and I obtained our first COVID-19 vaccination shots Jan. 10 at the Alaska Airlines Center in a three-day (by appointment) vaccination program run by the state. Although the state has been criticized for failings in the rollout of its vaccination program, I have nothing but compliments for the well-organized and smooth operation based on our experience. From the entry into the parking lot, check in, vaccination in semi-private booths, post-vaccination monitoring, making appoints for the second shot and checkout, staff “chaperoned” people through the process in a uniformly friendly, gracious and helpful manner. It took my wife and I just 30 minutes to go through the process.
A member of the medical staff administered the vaccine in coordination with a nurse who went over our personal details. Staff included state and municipal employees and contractor Fairweather. They all did a great job.
I believe this early rollout of vaccinations for seniors, as evidenced by this three-day program, provides a solid foundation and experience for the evolution and expansion of the state’s vaccination efforts to other seniors and later priority vaccination groups.
