Letter: Shift to hydrogen

As we come out of our dens in summer 2021, we shall see a new world demanding clean hydrogen fuel. John Parnell reported on Nov. 11, “Oliver Bishop, general manager, Shell, told GTM that China will clearly be an important market as hydrogen continues its emergence...” and “The government has announced growth targets of 100,000 fuel-cell vehicles by 2025 and 1 million vehicles by 2030.”

This could devastate Alaska, which remains focused on fossil fuels and pipelines. We should take a lesson from Shell and focus on clean energy development. I suggest converting our huge natural gas reserves into hydrogen fuel by steam-cracking using magma under active volcanos to create the required steam, without burning any gas, to create a value-added, more profitable export fuel.
