I don’t know if people outside of rural Alaska truly understand what a tragic event the loss of Kaktovik’s school is. It is hard to understand what an essential part schools play in small, remote communities. They serve as hotels, emergency community shelters, gathering points for sports, movies, games and potlucks. Sometimes they are one of the only public spaces a rural community has.
While part of the building and teacher housing — often one of the only housing options for educators from outside of the community — was saved, it is important to recognize that rebuilding in these communities also looks different and takes much longer, especially in the winter. I urge readers to contribute to the GoFundMe for Harold Kaveolook School, as this is so much more than a building burning down. It is truly a community loss.
