Letter: Alaska, a colony?

In the early morning hours of Jan. 1, 1959, I was awakened in a University of Alaska Fairbanks dorm room by a siren. Someone was blasting it to celebrate, as Alaska had just become a state. I recall that Alaskans were so proud of statehood in those days.

Alaskans should be aware that without a decent university, people in the U.S. will regard Alaska as a colony.
