Letter: Willful blindness

It turns out that for democracy to survive, people have to be informed and involved, with at least some intelligence. I talked to a couple who believe Trump when he boasts that China and Mexico are paying billions of dollars into the U.S. Treasury because of his tariffs. I told them that Americans are paying those tariffs and suggested that they check the dictionary for the definition of “tariff." I was told “That’s because they let just anyone put definitions into the dictionary now.”

With this sort of willful blindness, we will all suffer in the not-so-long run. But in the meantime, we can solve the homeless problem by cutting assistance to the poor, and solve unemployment by cutting education and sustain our fisheries and traditional way of life by allowing the Pebble Mine project to go forward.
