WASHINGTON -- Federal prosecutors plan to charge Enrique Marquez, a friend and neighbor of the couple who carried out the massacre in San Bernardino, California, earlier this month, according to law enforcement officials.
The Justice Department could make the charges public as early as Thursday. It would be the first time anyone has been charged in connection with the shooting on Dec. 2, which left 14 people dead.
Marquez has been cooperating with the federal authorities for several days, providing them with many details about the gunmen. He has told them that he and the male gunman, Syed Rizwan Farook, planned a terrorist attack in 2012, but called it off after the authorities had arrested some other men who were plotting to kill Americans.
Marquez, who converted to Islam several years ago, has also said that he purchased two of the assault rifles that were used in the shooting.
