Xochiquetzal-Tiqun dancers
Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month with a performance of the Xochiquetzal-Tiqun Mexican Folkloric Ballet of Alaska. Xochiquetzal-Tiqun is a group that includes young children, teens, and adults. Their program will feature dances from the states of Jalisco, Michoacán, Sinaloa, Tamaulipas, and Veracruz. The show is 2-3:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 26, at the Wilda Marston Auditorium in the Loussac Library. Free.
Celtic New Year
Take a break from jack-o'-lanterns and candy binges for Samhain, a Gaelic festival that marks the beginning of winter (also known as Celtic New Year). The Celtic Community of Anchorage will put together a celebration in the tradition of the Isle of Man, with old and new fire, an ancestor walk, drinks, finger food and more. You can even come in costume. Midnight Sun Cloggers will perform and there will be music from Rogues and Wenches and Crooked Road. 6:30-10:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 26, at the Anchorage Senior Center. $20 in advance, $25 at the door ($10 for children, seniors and military). See akcelts.org for more.
Beat the treats
It's Halloween weekend, a time for sugar and sweets. You can avoid the -- ahem -- weighty consequences of the season and do some good at the same time by attending Alaska Fit's third annual "Beat the Treats" workout class. The class is free but there's a suggested $20 donation for The Children's Lunchbox program at Bean's Cafe. Organizers say the workout will burn about 600 calories, or, eight and a half fun-size Kit Kat bars. 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 26, at 6251 Tuttle Place, Suite 102. Visit alaskafit.com to register.
Frightening flicks
So, maybe you like Halloween but you're over the party scene and old enough to buy your own candy. Maybe you just want to chill out and see a movie. The Alaska Experience Theatre downtown will be showing classic Halloween films from now until Saturday -- "Friday the 13th" on Friday, "Wallace and Gromit: Curse of the Were-Rabbit," and "The Omen" on Saturday -- with a Halloween screening of "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" on Thursday, Oct. 31 (for ages 21 and over). Tickets are $8.50; it's $15 in advance and $20 at the door for the Halloween show (gift bag included). At 333 W. Fourth Ave., see alaskaexperiencetheatre.com for more.
