Alaska Department of Fish and Game biologists say they are working to capture and relocate a family of five black bears frequenting the Government Hill neighborhood but haven't yet been in the right place at the right time to do so. The bears have been seen as far afield as Mountain View, said regional wildlife biologist Dave Saafeld.
The method of capture will be determined by the circumstances, he said -- biologists want to avoid a situation with a crowd of onlookers. If not all captured at once, the bears will likely be held at the Alaska Zoo in Anchorage until they can be reunited and then relocated to Portage Valley south of Anchorage.
The department had originally planned to kill the garbage-adapted bears but changed course after Gov. Bill Walker intervened, asking the biologists to look for another solution.
