Anchorage's most famously diverse neighborhood to get its own farmers market

Mountain View is getting a farmers market to call its own. The Anchorage Community Land Trust announced plans Wednesday to launch a farmers market in the East Anchorage neighborhood.

Organizers hope the market will capitalize on the cultural diversity in the neighborhood. Mountain View is considered one of the most diverse in the nation.

Emily Cohn, development and communications coordinator for the land trust, said the nonprofit is still a few weeks away from launching vendor applications. But she said interest from businesses, farmers and even community groups wanting to sell prepared food is strong.

The market will be on Thursdays so vendors can continue participating in other weekend farmers markets across the city. But even though it's a weekday, Cohn said to expect a festive market experience.

"It'll be like a mini street fair," she said.

The market will be in a vacant lot by Clark Middle School. Cohn said the land trust owns the property and is hoping to redevelop the lot in the future.

"We thought this was the perfect way to activate the site and bring interest into what was an unused, blighted lot," she said.

Cohn said a fundraiser Wednesday night at Resolution Brewing Co. would help offset some of the cost of opening the market, which is estimated to be about $10,000.

The market is scheduled to open June 16 and run every Thursday through Aug. 25 from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. at 3543 Mountain View Drive.
