Ketchikan school board recommends kindergarten as cutoff for bus drop-offs

KETCHIKAN -- The Ketchikan School Board has voted to recommend kindergarten as the minimum level for student bus drop-offs.

KRBD reports the recommendation was made with a vote of 4-to-2 Wednesday night.

The decision followed a tied vote on the issue and a lot of discussion.

The question was presented to the board by First Student, the bus company used by the school district.

A company representative asked that a minimum age be set for students to be dropped off or picked up alone.

The representative originally recommended third-grade.

The transportation committee, however, didn't believe that was the right fit for the southeast Alaska town.
