Three injured in Fairbanks bar shooting, police say

Four people were injured in a shooting at Club Manchu early Friday morning, according to the Fairbanks Police Department.

Shots were fired at the bar around 1:30 a.m., police said. A man entered Club Manchu and pulled a gun from his waistband while approaching "his intended victim" in an enclosed patio area, they said.

The man who was targeted pulled out a gun of his own and fired three times. All three shots struck the alleged instigator, police said.

Having suffered three gunshot wounds, the man Fairbanks police are calling "the attacker" was taken to a hospital and treated. He is expected to recover.

Police said the third bar patron injured in the shooting was likely saved by a crucifix on a chain around his neck. One of the three shots ricocheted and hit the crucifix, causing the bullet to break apart.

That third man was flown to Anchorage for medical treatment and Fairbanks police said they did not have an update on his condition.

A bartender also suffered minor shrapnel injuries to her shoulder and back. She's been treated and released, police said.

Fairbanks communications director Amber Courtney said police and prosecutors are working to determine if charges can be filed against the attacker. Police are not releasing his name until that happens, she said.

Anyone with information on the shooting is asked to call Fairbanks detective Scott Adams at 907-495-6552.
