Police investigate shootout in South Anchorage towing yard

Anchorage police responded to a shooting just after 7:30 p.m. Saturday at a South Anchorage towing yard.

In a dispatch Saturday night, police wrote that a man was watching over the towing yard at 57th Avenue on behalf of owners Fred's Towing after some recent thefts. According to the report, he saw someone in the towing yard and "made verbal contact" with the intruder, who shot him in the leg.

The injured man fired several shots from his own gun, and the intruder ran away and jumped the fence surrounding the towing yard. The man who'd been watching over the yard went to the hospital with a nonlife-threatening wound. It's not known whether the suspect was hit by the gunfire.

The suspect was described as about 6 feet, 3 inches tall, 200 pounds and wearing a gray hoodie and dark pants. A perimeter was set up, and a K-9 track was conducted, but the suspect hasn't been apprehended.
