A 35-year-old Anchorage man was arrested early Friday after he threatened a woman with a gun and barricaded himself inside a downtown apartment with her infant for four hours late Thursday, according to Anchorage police.
Police received a call around 8 p.m. Thursday that Jeremiah Hancotte had pointed a gun at a female inside an apartment in the 800 block of West 11th Avenue, said Jennifer Castro, police spokeswoman.
When the woman attempted to leave with her infant, Hancotte assaulted her "in an effort to get possession of the child," Castro said. Police said he took the child back into the apartment.
The woman left to get help, Castro said. Castro said she could not release Hancotte's relationship with the infant.
Police responded and determined Hancotte was inside the home with the child and potentially armed, Castro said. The SWAT team also responded.
"The male suspect was uncooperative with police and refused to come out of the unit," Castro said in an email.
Police entered the apartment around midnight, found Hancotte with firearms and arrested him, Castro said.
No one was injured in the standoff and the infant was returned to the mother, Castro said.
Hancotte faces charges of kidnapping, assault, reckless endangerment and misconduct involving weapons.
