Fly Alaska Airlines? The allowed size of your carry-on is about to shrink.

The allowed size for your carry-on bag on Alaska Airlines flights is about to get smaller.

Starting June 4, the maximum carry-on dimensions will change from 24 inches in length to 22 inches (including wheels and handles), will drop from 17 inches in height to 14 inches, and will narrow from 10 inches in width to 9 inches. That goes for flights on Alaska, Horizon Air and SkyWest.

The company is making the change to mesh better with other airlines, according to a post on the Alaska Airlines website. The current dimensions allowed by Alaska are larger than most other international and domestic airlines, the post said.

"We're changing our bag size allowance to make sure that your carry-on bag will be accepted aboard all the flights within your itinerary," according to the website. "This will help you avoid carry-on bag size conflicts and make connections with other airlines easier during your future trips. Best of all, we'll be able to fit more carry-on bags into the overhead bins."

Alaska Airlines spokeswoman Ann Johnson offered an example of passengers leaving Alaska Airlines with 24-inch bags and heading to a British Airways flight, where they'd have to check their bag.

"It's a poor experience for customers," she said. "(This) just makes it easier, so people aren't caught off guard."

Passengers will still be allowed one carry-on bag and one personal item like a purse or briefcase. In the next few months, the airline will have updated bag sizers at airports, so people can see if their bag fits the new parameters.
