Actor James Morrison, who was raised in Anchorage, recounts his beloved son’s struggle with and ultimate recovery from brain cancer in this personally influenced one-man play. Tickets are $30 for adults and $20 for seniors, students and first responders. Thursday’s opening night, starting at 6:30 p.m., is a special performance to benefit the nonprofit Katie’s Handprint, which supports Alaska families affected by childhood cancer. Tickets start at $50 and run up to $500 with any funds over $30 per ticket going to Katie’s Handprint.
Oktoberfest at 49th State Brewing
11 a.m. Saturday; 49th State Brewing, 717 W. Third Ave.
This Oktoberfest celebration features live music from Alaska Blaskapelle, a German food menu, special German-style beer releases by the stein, beer festival competitions, llamas from Last Frontier Trail Llamas and a dance party with DJ Mancat. The first 1,100 people through the gate receive a free 1-liter commemorative stein. Tickets are $5. The festival is also partnering with Skinny Raven Sports for the Oktoberfest 5K and 10K on Saturday at 11 a.m.
Fall Harvest Festival
Noon-6 p.m. Saturday; Pyrah’s Pioneer Peak Farm, 4334 S. Bodenburg Loop in Palmer
Pyrah’s Pioneer Peak Farm’s Fall Fest runs for three consecutive Saturdays starting this weekend. It includes a pumpkin patch, hayrides, wagon rides, balloon art, food, live entertainment, farmland, games, prizes and more. Tickets are $10.
Blueberry Ball
Noon Saturday; Skeetawk, 3500 N. Skeetawk Circle at Hatcher Pass
This music festival will have a beer garden, food trucks, chairlift rides and more. The lineup includes Zen Trembles, Cold Country, Raised by Elephants and Loaded Rivers. Admission is a suggested donation of $30 or $35 at the gate. Kids 12 and under are admitted free.
Anchorage Pirate Fest
2 p.m. Saturday; 544 W. Fifth Ave.
The Pirate Cove market opens at 2 p.m. and is a family-friendly gathering for all with activities and challenges for kids. At 7 p.m., the 15th annual pub crawl gets underway with a group photo in Town Square Park. The pub crawl is for adults 21 and older and is free to participate in.
Dragons and Dungeons
7 p.m. Saturday and 4 p.m. Sunday; private residence (location/directions revealed upon ticket purchase)
The kickoff for the Anchorage Festival of Music’s dragon-themed concert season will feature baroque songs and instrumental music about dragons. Special guests include Victoria Fraser, soprano, and Jonathan Salzedo, harpsichord. Tickets are $50 for adults and $25 for youth/students, and include a post-concert reception with wine and hors d’oeuvres.
Judy Collins
7:30 p.m. Sunday; Discovery Theatre, 621 W. Sixth Ave.
Singer-songwriter Judy Collins has a career spanning six decades, from the folk revival of the early ‘60s to the influential 1967 album “Wildflowers” to Grammy-nominated records in the last decade. Tickets are $42-$76.
