Two film festivals
There are a couple interesting film events happening this week.
On the University of Alaska Anchorage campus, you can check out the work that African-American cinematic pioneers created in the mid-teens to mid-1940s. While overcoming the obstacles of a pervasively white Hollywood, directors like Oscar Micheaux and William D. Foster worked in burlesque comedy, melodrama, made religious-based works and even took on surrealism. "Invisibility: African-American Film Developments 1916-1946" will show at the Kimura Gallery, open 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Friday and Monday-Thursday, 3700 Alumni Drive. Free. Check online at on.adn.com/2mh1x5D for a full list of film screenings.
In the Valley, the third annual Equinox Women's Film Festival is underway. The international festival showcases films by women and about women and films this year that were written, directed and produced by Alaska women, or took place in Alaska. 6-8 p.m. Friday, Glenn Massay Theater, 8295 E. College Drive, Palmer. $15. (907-373-6977, facebook.com/EquinoxFilmFestival)
