A missing man in the Western Alaska village of Igiugig was found dead almost exactly a day after he disappeared, according to Alaska State Troopers.
In a Friday dispatch, troopers said 35-year-old William Nickoli was last seen at about 2:30 p.m. Monday in the Kvichak River community of about 55 people, roughly 50 miles northeast of King Salmon.
"Village community members advised that the village and all buildings had been searched with negative results," troopers wrote. "At approximately (3:12 p.m.), Iliamna AST learned that the body of William Nickoli was located and that Mr. Nickoli was deceased. Next of kin was on scene."
According to trooper spokeswoman Megan Peters, Nickoli was last seen at a home in Igiugig before reportedly leaving on foot. Peters said his attire was unsuitable for "prolonged time outdoors."
Residents of Igiugig looked for Nickoli on their own, Peters said, finding his body in "a swampy area outside of town" before troopers could join search efforts.
"People in the community searched by air, ground and boat prior to contacting us," Peters wrote. "Shortly after a report was made, community members located him deceased."
Troopers say Nickoli's body was flown to the State Medical Examiner Office in Anchorage for an autopsy. Peters said no specific factors have immediately been identified in Nickoli's death. An investigation remains open.
