Juneau police create drop box for turning in prescription drugs

JUNEAU — Residents of Juneau looking to unload prescription medications can now drop them off at the police department free of consequence.

KTOO-FM reports that Monday marked the beginning for the Juneau Police Department's RX Drug Drop, a locked metal container in the lobby of the department where people can anonymously dispose of medications.

Prior to the drop box, the DEA, along with the Juneau Police Department, would round up surplus pharmaceuticals twice a year.

Juneau Drug Company pharmacist Adam Nelson says many patients ask to return unused medication to him, which is not an option. He says flushing pills down the toilet is an equally bad solution since they can contaminate streams and creeks.

Juneau police Lt. Chris Sell says the department confiscated 374 prescription opioid pills last year.
