A 29-year-old man was arrested Saturday on a warrant for manslaughter charges in the death of his 2-month-old baby, Alaska State Troopers said.
In an online dispatch, troopers wrote that Wasilla-based officers received a tip about the location of Aaron Vanormer, who'd been the subject of a warrant issued in December in connection with the June death of his 2-month-old child.
Troopers said they responded to a home where Vanormer and his girlfriend were. The two were "initially non-compliant," troopers wrote, but Vanormer "eventually exited the residence and was arrested without incident."
"Essentially, we asked them to come out," troopers spokeswoman Megan Peters wrote in an email. "They said no. Later, they changed their minds and came out."
In June, Vanormer's child was found lying motionless in a bathtub at the Spenard Hotel by the child's grandfather, according to a criminal complaint. The grandfather had gone to the hotel room when he became concerned that he had not heard from Vanormer.
The baby's mother, Vanessa Wulf, was in jail for probation violations at the time of the child's death, but Vanormer told officers Wulf had arrived at the hotel and placed the baby in the tub. He also claimed to have been arguing with Wulf, but he said he was hallucinating and had been awake for two to three days.
The infant's uncle also believed Vanormer smoked Spice, the complaint stated.
Vanormer was not arrested after his initial interview, but has been wanted on a $50,000 arrest warrant since December, when charges were filed.
Vanormer was arraigned Monday afternoon at the Anchorage Correctional Complex, according to online court records. His bail was set at $50,000.
