DOC orders review of security after inmate injured at Mat-Su jail

New Alaska Department of Corrections commissioner Ronald Taylor ordered a "mandatory review of basic security protocols" at all Alaska jails after an inmate was injured in an incident at the Mat-Su Pretrial Facility Monday officials so far refuse to describe.

DOC spokeswoman Sherrie Daigle said the 39-year-old inmate was injured around 7 p.m. Monday. She would not describe the nature of severity of the inmate's injuries, or release his name Tuesday.

Daigle also would not say where inside the jail the incident happened or if anyone else was involved, citing an "ongoing investigation."

The injured inmate was taken to Providence Alaska Medical Center in Anchorage for treatment. Alaska State Troopers were called in to investigate the incident, Daigle said.

AST spokeswoman Megan Peters said troopers "were notified of an inmate sustaining injuries but no foul play is suspected."

It was the second incident in which an inmate was hurt at the facility in the past few months. In October, an inmate, also 39, was injured when he jumped from the second story of the facility, DOC officials said.

Two people being held in Alaska jails have committed suicide since Dec. 19, one in Ketchikan and one in Anchorage.
