Trailside Discovery

Naturalist staff lead small groups outdoors teaching the basics of wetlands, geology, mammals, and outdoor skills using hands-on activities, movement, music and storytelling, drama. Classes include, Jurassic Journey, Underwater Wonders, Wilderness Survival and Outdoor Odyssey.

Wilderness Camp

After one day of checking gear, reviewing equipment practicing wilderness safety, campers leave on Tuesday for four days of camping.Trips Include: Russian Lake Bike, Moose River Meander Canoe,Kesugi Ridge Backpack, Midship Misfits, Canoe Voyager.

Age or grade level: Ages 12-14

When: 7:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m., June 2-Aug. 15

Wilderness Trips

After two days of checking gear, reviewing equipment practicing skill campers leave on Wednesday for three days of camping. Trips include: Swanson Lake Canoe, Hatcher Pass Backpack, Bike Pack Odyssey, Sailing, Kayak Scout and many more.

Age or grade level: Ages 8-9 and 10-11

Trailside Discovery

These fast paced high adventure programs are well suited for older campers. We head out on many field trips. Classes Include, Peak Baggers, River Wranglers, Reach High & Sail Away. Two staff per 12-13 campers.

Knik Bay Wilderness Leadership Expedition

This two-week trip is for highly motivated individuals seeking to develop youth leadership skills who have previous kayaking and backpacking experience. The trip will focus on building leadership skills and group development.

Teacher Naturalist In Training

This naturalist leadership course is for campers who are ready to share their passion, experience and skills. We will develop leadership skills to prepare for future jobs. TNT graduates may be asked back to volunteer.

HOMER WILDERNESS LEADERS

Wild, Sustainable Summer

We'll integrate farming, cooking, art, science, wilderness skills, and leadership into our weekly sessions based at a Homer homestead featured on Discovery Channel's "Alaska the Last Frontier." Every week you'll get a box of vegetables.

Age or grade level: Ages 10-14

Dates: Noon-4 p.m. Mondays, May 26-Aug 18

SEEK (Science and Engineering Kamp) ALASKA

Sponsor: Science and Engineering Experience Kamp Trust

Have fun with Science and Engineering. SEEK Alaska is a five-day resident camp held at UAA. Students perform scientific research and explore engineering design using hands-on experiments, mathematical prediction, problem solving, brainstorming and other active-learning methods. They learn that technical topics are not too tough or mysterious. Classroom and outdoor experiences include individual effort, team collaboration, writing, speaking, research and light-hearted competition. Lodging, meals, and instructional materials are included — plus use of a notebook computer. This fully chaperoned camp is limited to 14 students. A fantastic academic camp with great reviews. ALASKA BOTANICAL GARDEN

Junior Master Gardener Day Camp

The Alaska Botanical Garden's Junior Master Gardener Day Camp is a weekly program allowing youth to learn about and connect with the outdoors and gardening. This program runs for eight weeks and teaches kids about gardening, soil, seeds, insects and more. Camp attendees come to ABG one day per week (Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday) in the morning (9 am – 12 pm) or afternoon (1 – 4 pm) each week June 2nd-July 23.

Age or grade level: Ages 7-12

Lego Robotics Camp

Chinese Culture Camp

Culture camp for children interested in learning more about Chinese language and culture. Teachers visiting from Taiwan will instruct students in Chinese language, dance, arts and crafts, sports, and cultural traditions. This year's camp will span five days including a pot luck and performances by the children Friday evening.

Java Programming

In this week-long academy, students will learn how to write Java programs and be introduced to the field of Computer Science. Topics including object-oriented programming, Java syntax, and the Eclipse development environment will be covered.

Gears and Sprockets

In this week-long academy, students will learn to design and build mechanical drive trains for vehicles. Topics will include friction, torque, motors, gears, sprockets, and belts. Attendees will construct vehicles optimized for speed, acceleration, and climbing to compete on an obstacle-filled racetrack.

Summer Engineering Academy-Robotics

In this week-long academy, students will learn to design, build, and program a robot to complete a task. Topics will include motors, actuators, sensors and programming. Attendees will assemble a robot that will compete in both user-piloted and autonomous challenges such as an obstacle course.

Age or grade level: Grades 6-9; grades 10-12

Dates: 8 a.m.-3 p.m., June 23-27; July 14-18

3D Modeling

In this week-long academy, students will learn to geomodel buildings in 3D from facility blueprints and digital images. Attendees will use image processing tools and mapping software. 3D building models created throughout the week will be published and shared online.

Dates: 8 a.m.-3 p.m., June 16-20

Energy

In this week-long academy, students will learn how energy is produced and consumed, with a focus on renewable sources. Attendees will create a mini power grid using a small photovoltaic array, wind turbine, battery bank, and various electrical loads, which will be tested for effectiveness and efficiency.

Structure Destruction

In this week-long academy, students will learn how bridges, buildings, and towers work. Attendees will design, analyze with computer software, and construct a Basswood bridge, which will be subjected to destructive testing to determine the strength, stiffness, and material efficiency.

Yak Academy is a foreign language program that offers Spanish and Mandarin Chinese language mini camps. Tanaina's experienced teachers lead a group of school-age children into summer exploration of the natural world around us. Children will be learning basics of ecology, gardening, natural history, Alaska animals and much more through everyday field trips to various parks, lakes, botanical gardens, museums and other exciting locations. All daily activities will incorporate art/craft activities, reading interactive games to support children's learning and discoveries. Year-round program is available and currently enrolling now.

Waldorf-Inspired Japanese Program

Depending on camp dates, children will experience the elements of water and fire such as building a watercourse, making boats, watercolor painting, baking breads and a fire story. Bricks 4 Kidz® camps are offered throughout the year. Camp themes and activities are specifically designed for children ages 6-13. Your children will have barrels of fun as they use LEGO® bricks to explore the world of engineering and architecture through friendly and team-based activities. Children will build and design motorized models, construct and play with their own inspired creations and participate in fun games and challenges. All materials are supplied. Bayshore Young Explorers

Join our nationally accredited early learning center this summer. Children reconnect with nature and discover what an amazing world is right out the door. Exploring nature is a complete sensory experience.
