As sea ice retreats further from Barrow each summer, and takes longer to return in the fall, the coastline of the United States' northernmost city is increasingly vulnerable to the wind-driven waves from Arctic Ocean storms.

And sometimes, when the bluffs collapse, they yield the remains of humans long ago buried there.
