Anchorage police said they have identified a suspect in the Christmas Day carjacking near the Northway Mall, and it's an acquaintance of the victim.
The incident was first reported when a man dialed 911 just after 5 p.m. and said a friend had stolen his green 1995 Mercury Tracer, said Jennifer Castro, police spokeswoman.
The man said he met the friend outside his car. The car was locked and running in the parking lot of an apartment complex at Fourth Avenue and Bragaw Street, she said.
When the man refused to give his friend a ride, the friend pulled out a gun and pointed it at him, Castro said.
The armed man broke a car window, got in and drove off, she said.
Police found the car running about 30 minutes later with no one inside near Northway Drive and Penland Parkway.
Police are not identifying the carjacker or victim for the victim's safety, she said.
Police have not found the carjacker but have issued a warrant for his arrest.
