The Anchorage Fire Department responded to a fire in the trees along the Chester Creek Trail near Rogers Park Friday night, but had it under control by about 10 p.m., fire officials said.
The fire, which was reported shortly after 9 p.m., grew rapidly to about an acre along the greenbelt trail, said AFD spokesman John See. About 15 units responded, including three water tenders, See said. The trail was closed to pedestrians and bicyclists at one point, according to an AFD dispatcher.
As of 10:20 p.m., the fire had been knocked down and was under control, but crews were still doing mop-up work, which would likely continue for several hours, See said.
There was a camp in the area with two tents, furniture and a smoldering fire pit, but the cause of the blaze was not immediately known, See said.
